Sexual and reproductive health rights was something that I volunteered my time and professional training to long before it affected me. I have a masters level education and grew up in a rural area where any health care, let alone thorough and accurate reproductive health care, was difficult to access. So SRH advocacy and education felt like an important way for me to merge my lived experience and education to give back.
Fast forward a few years after grad school and I got pregnant (despite being on the pill!) during my period. Yes it can happen! I immediately knew it wasn’t the right time or space in my life for this and ordered Plan C pills by mail. Thank god for Plan C.
My abortion was uncomfortable but I had a supportive network that connected me with resources for what to expect, and it felt very much like a bad period combined with the flu. Within 24 hours, I was so relieved that the medication abortion had been effective and was complete.
Now I am pregnant at a time when I’m ready, and excited. There is so much misinformation and often dramatization around what abortions are, that I wanted to share my rather boring story; especially as it ends in a completely fertile and healthy state where I was later ready to conceive on my own terms and timeline. In fact, we didn’t even have to “try”! I’m so glad that choice was possible for me and I will never stop fighting for every womxn to have the same autonomy over their body.
