I had an abortion three years ago when I was 24 . At the time, I was a mom to two boys; one who was stuck during delivery and survived brain damage, but was permanently disabled. My youngest was 1 at the time, and I was already biting more than I could chew with two kids. A third pregnancy was not something I was ready for. I found out when I was 8 weeks, and wasn’t able to get the procedure until a week later due to the wait list. HB2 was still in effect and people were traveling to my city for their abortions. I received financial assistance from the Lilith Fund in Texas, and a month after my procedure I was trained as one of their hotline volunteers. My experience with financial assistance ignited a passion inside to do more for others like me. Now, I talk with others like me as a counselor at the same clinic I had my abortion at — a goal that seemed unattainable when I set it a few years ago. It is both a privilege and honor to hear the stories shared by other Texans needing this type of healthcare, and supporting them in the ways I can. My abortion changed my life.
