Lifesaving. That’s how I describe how I felt after my abortion to anyone who asks.

When I was 22, my boyfriend was simultaneously overbearing and unfaithful. After years of conversations among our friends about women’s reproductive rights, and what I thought was  mutual agreement that abortion was a woman’s choice, he did a complete 180 when I told him I was pregnant. Rather than trying to change his mind, I broke up with him and called the only person I could trust for help: my mom.

We went to Planned Parenthood in Columbus, OH twice, and the staff, nurses and doctors provided a safe, calming environment. I felt incredibly supported in my decision, and never once judged.

My abortion was the best decision I ever made for myself and what would have been a child. I was not ready to be a mother, and a single mother at that. Frankly, I’m not sure I’ll ever be ready, but I’m glad that the choice was mine.
