MAREMOTO x SYA Bandana

This bandana was created for International Safe Abortion Day, which falls on September 28th each year. International Safe Abortion Day was initially created by feminist organizers seeking to uplift the life-saving impact of abortion rights in Latin America, and it is now observed all over the world. The green bandana pays homage to the Marea Verde (aka the Green Wave), a transnational movement for abortion rights which originated in Argentina and has been adopted by those working for abortion rights across south, central and north America. The bandana features images evoking a safe at-home abortion: pills, cups of tea, a comfortable house, snacks, a cell phone, and a friendly cat.

About the artist
This bandana was created for SYA by CDMX-based artist Mariana Lorenzo, aka Maremoto. Mar is a textile designer and illustrator whose art passionately advocates for women’s rights, exploring themes of self-esteem, feminism, and LGBTQ advocacy. Maremoto’s work embodies a spirit of freedom and resistance, breaking barriers in human identity.
SYA first worked with Mar on an English/Spanish poster collaboration for March 8th, International Women’s Day. That initial collaboration grew into a series of international pro-abortion posters with messaging in Italian, French, Portuguese, Kannada, Faroese, and more!
