In response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, #ShoutYourAbortion has coordinated a nationwide series of installations designed to elevate the visibility of people who choose abortion.

Abortion has been a common, legal medical procedure in the US for 43 years, but access to safe and legal abortion has become nonexistent for millions of citizens. State laws around the country deliberately shutter clinics and shrink our access to abortion services with every passing year. The 5–3 decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt says restrictions like those recently put in place in Texas are unconstitutional, which is a huge victory for Texas clinics and likely for clinics in states with similar laws. It’s a landmark decision. And we’re not stopping there.
If you know more than three women, you likely know someone who has had an abortion. We are your sisters, your bosses, your daughters, and your friends. But you don’t know our stories because those working to eliminate our rights have demonized us. Because of this, many of us have chosen to hide or have been deeply harmed by shame.
But we cannot demand justice for an invisible population. And our opposition can only get away with legislating this issue in a way that is fundamentally out of touch with the values and experiences of Americans if those who choose abortion remain invisible.
The era of compulsory silence is ending. Abortion is normal. Our stories are ours to tell. This is not a debate. #ShoutYourAbortion.
