In response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Whole Women’s Health v Hellerstedt, the most monumental abortion rights decision in a generation, #ShoutYourAbortion coordinated a nationwide series of installations designed to elevate the visibility of people who choose abortion.
Portraits of 48 individuals wearing the “Everyone Knows I Had An Abortion” t-shirt appeared in Seattle, Portland, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Antonio.
NYC photographer and producer Jackie Neale heard about SYA’s project a few weeks before it was to be unveiled and went all in. She curated her own longform reel, integrating SYA’s portraits with work from a number of prominent NYC artists and activists. Jackie amassed a team of volunteers, sourced free materials and scouted locations all over Brooklyn and Manhattan.
On June 27th, Jackie and her team installed the projections in half a dozen locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. This photo was taken above the Brooklyn Queens Express.
