My friend took this picture of me for a photo project a couple months back. I’m sharing it now to join those doing #shoutyourabortion in the aftermath of Ohio and Oklahoma. When this picture was taken, I was still carrying the weight I put on after my last failed pregnancy. I let my friend paint my stretch marks gold and I told her about the experiences that led to their development. I’ve been pregnant twice and have had both a miscarriage and an abortion. I know I’m not alone but it still takes courage to talk about these things sometimes. Today I’m feeling both brave and grateful and thought I’d share. I’m grateful to live in a state where it is relatively easy for a woman to have an abortion. I’m grateful I’m not a mother. I have no regrets. My body is my own, my life is my own, and I’m lucky to be able to say that. That the time to learn about reproductive rights. Most people who are anti-abortion don’t actually have a clue of what happens during the procedure, what it’s like to make that decision, how much it costs (both emotionally and financially) or how bad the social stigma is. Liz Plank of Vox news did a wonderful piece on common misconceptions about abortion. You should spare a few minutes to watch it.
