Mission

#ShoutYourAbortion is working to destigmatize abortion by creating a network of voices and a platform for women to tell their stories. By creating and archiving abortion stories, hosting events where women can exchange and record their stories, and building a diverse web presence that provides a digital space for these narratives, #ShoutYourAbortion is changing the cultural conversation about abortion by placing women’s voices at the center.

Since #ShoutYourAbortion was launched in September 2015, the hashtag has been used over 250,000 times and has empowered countless individuals to discuss their abortion experiences without shame—sometimes for the first time in their lives. As an emerging prong of the pro-choice movement, #ShoutYourAbortion is using tactics and strategy that complement the work of organizations like Planned Parenthood and NARAL by filling a void that these entities cannot. Attitudes towards abortion can change, but not unless women feel comfortable talking about abortion on their own terms: that’s why #ShoutYourAbortion is necessary.

The anti-choice movement succeeds in denying women their reproductive autonomy by encouraging and leveraging the stigmatization of abortion. #ShoutYourAbortion wants to help women reject the expectation of shame by providing opportunities for individuals to feel comfortable telling their stories. Until recently, opponents of choice have successfully drowned out the voices of women by shouting the loudest and most aggressively; the #ShoutYourAbortion movement wants to make women’s voices louder and help take the pro-choice movement off of the defensive.

#ShoutYourAbortion is currently running a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGogo so that we can build a strong and permanent web presence, host events and cover expenses necessary to the work we are doing. Please consider donating and sharing this link on social media. Thank you!
